![]() To be honest though, he hooked me from the start with: “In the truck, I just can’t wait. ![]() And hell, it’s pretty much Johnny Cash compared to that Garth cover Sam Hunt teased yesterday. Sure, it’s a bit pop country for my taste, I’d want some fiddle and steel in there, but if you heard this on mainstream country radio, you probably wouldn’t think twice. But now, he’s back with another one, this time flipping Blink 182’s 2001 hit “First Date” into a pop(ish) country tune.Īnd as one YouTube commenter put it, it “low key slaps.” Remember when Korn covered Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down To Georgia?” Or how about when Sturgill Simpson laid down a quick bluegrass version of Post Malone’s “Sunflower”?Or, again with the bluegrass Post Malone, the very talented Billy Strings’ performed killer version of “Circles.”What is it about bluegrass Post Malone? I have no idea but it just works.Īnyways, a couple weeks ago, we showed you Alex Melton’s pop punk version of the Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces” and people were loving it. The song is not representative of the avant-garde, but is merely a song intended to be easy to listen to and connect well with the listener and their shared experiences.Country goes punk, punk goes country… maybe it’s the music nerd in me, but I think it’s cool to hear artists reimagine songs in different styles. The value truly lies in the emotional attachment that the song is able to produce. Similarly, for those who are able to connect with the lyrical content, the song provides a sympathetic feeling of nostalgia. When taken at face value, the song is friendly and non-combative. Despite all of the clichés that Blink caters to, the song is undoubtedly capable of generating enjoyment. First Date is no different, here the poppy and radio oriented summer anthem panders to the emotions of the apprehensive teenager. They appear to reside in a stereotypical punk sound world. In terms of their musical aesthetics, from my understanding, their content lacks individuality and creativity. Greatest Hits is a greatest hits compilation album by Blink-182, released on November 1, 2005, following the bands split earlier in the year. Their general disregard for entering the adult world coupled with their narratives on teen struggles allows them to appeal to a steadfast fan base. ![]() Despite the simplicity of their music, and the seemingly repetitive nature to each of their albums, Blink-182 produces music that is plainly enjoyable. ![]() 1 contributor total, last edit on Aug 03, 2016. Again, Blink is able to strike a chord with many of their listeners and have established themselves as a relatable group. Specifically, First Date explores the stages of awkwardness and anxiety of going on a first date with someone that makes one feel uncomfortable. They seem to capture the essence of challenging authority and attempting to navigate the social expectations of a teenager. Despite their age, Blink is able to touch upon the issues, disregarding their real world implications, which teens face. Blink-182 created a niche of pandering to the perceived struggles commonly associated with adolescent life. Again, the band seems to follow a familiar architecture of their pieces regardless of their album and membership changes. It certainly follows a verse-chorus format where the simplicity of the song does not define its meaning and value. There is essentially no variance or discrepancy in the arrangement of the song. As with many of Blink-182’s songs, one is seemingly able to begin listening at any point in the song and have the opportunity to grasp the aims of the piece. The repetitive nature of the guitar that is so steadfast in Blink’s songs coupled with the, at times, flowing vocals allows for an anthemic nature to the piece. First Date yearns for movement, and provides a rhythm that can be appreciated and savored by many. As with many of their upbeat and surface music it appeal to the body of the listener. The heavy influence of the drums mixed with simple and repetitive guitar riffs create a sounds that is accessible and appropriate for the message they are attempting to convey throughout this album. The song plays to the strength of the band and occupies a similar sound world of their previous work. Released in 2001, Blink-182’s “First Date” acted as the second single off of their fourth studio album Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.
